S/MIME Certificates
Email client certificates have a public/private key pair. Your private key stays with you and is used to sign outgoing emails and decrypt incoming emails encrypted with your public key. Your public key is used to verify your signature and encrypt emails sent to you.

S/MIME is the accepted method (more precisely, a protocol) for sending digitally signed and encrypted messages. S/MIME allows you to encrypt emails and digitally sign them. When you use S/MIME, it helps the people who receive the message by:
  • Ensuring that the message in their inbox is the exact message that started with the sender.
  • Ensuring that the message came from the specific sender and not from someone pretending to be the sender.
To do this, S/MIME utilizes cryptographic security features such as authentication, message integrity, and non-repudiation of origin (using digital signatures). S/MIME also helps enhance privacy and data security (using encryption) for electronic messaging.

  1. The original message will get captured after the sender clicks on the send message button.
  2. Once the original message is captured, the encryption process will use the receivers' public key.
  3. The encrypted message will be replaced by the original message, which the sender sent.
  4. Finally, the encrypted email is sent to the receiver.

  2. The encrypted message is captured and needs to be decrypted.
  3. The message is decrypted using a private key from the receiver.
  4. Once the intended recipient decrypts the message, it can be read.
